As an Art Psychotherapist I use an integrative approach when working this is based on developmental research and theories describing the self-protective defenses used when interruptions have taken place in normal development. I draw on a number of theories for example client-centered, object relations, transactional analysis, attachment, psychoanalytic, self psychology and gestalt theory.

Who can benefit from Art Psychotherapy?

Art psychotherapy is an effective short or long term approach for many of the difficulties that you have experienced in your life.

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Isolation
  • Low self-esteem & lack of assertiveness
  • Depression, anxiety, panic attacks & chronic stress
  • Post traumatic stress disorder
  • Sexual abuse (as a child or as an adult)
  • Separation, loss & bereavement
  • Body image issues
  • Addiction
  • Changing negative thoughts & patterns of behaviour
  • Difficulties in same sex relationships
  • Anyone whose life has been affected by adoption

How will it help?

People come to Art Psychotherapy because they want to change their behaviour, thought or feeling that somehow prevents them from relating to their world and others in a way that is meaningful. The use of the Arts has a powerful capacity to tap elements of experiences, thoughts, and emotions that talking alone cannot.  You require no previous art experience. Within the sessions you will have a choice of accessing a range of art materials, for example paints, pencils, the use of a sand tray, music, clay, chalks, collages and poetry. However, you choose to engage in the process it will open uncharted areas of your soul to seek healing and inner peace.
